How much will I need?
You'll need at least 5-10% of the overall price of the property to put down as a deposit.
Remember the bigger your deposit, the smaller your mortgage and the less interest you'll pay in the long term. A larger deposit could also help you get a better mortgage deal.

Help from elsewhere
Could you borrow some money from your parents? Or move back home to save on rent?
If that's not ideal you could consider buying a property with a friend or family member. There are also Government-backed schemes designed to help first-time buyers.

Cut back on treats
Are there any little luxuries you could cut back on to reach your goal quicker?
Remember to cancel unused gym memberships and consider cutting out the mid-week takeaway.

Start saving
Standing orders can make it easy
Set up a standing order to transfer money to a savings account as soon as you've been paid. You can use one of our savings accounts to save for your deposit.
Are you eligible for Help to Buy?
If you're a first-time buyer, you may be eligible for Government help in saving for your deposit. You can check if you're eligible on the Help to Buy website.
If you're eligible, this could provide a boost to your savings as the Government will pay a bonus of 25%, so, for every £200 you save, you'll get £50.
