What is credit scoring?

Credit scoring is a system to help lenders make decisions and assess your application for credit. It's designed to predict how likely those lenders are to get their money back. It’s a consistent, accurate and fair way of assessing risk.

Knowing your credit score is really important, as your score will impact your ability to borrow money:

Higher credit scores typically mean you are more likely to be accepted for credit than lower scores

Lower credit scores could mean you may not be eligible for certain types of borrowing

Understanding our credit decisions

There are a few reasons why sometimes we might not be able to lend you money. We've listed out some of those reasons below, as well as information on how to appeal a decision. Bear in mind the below is not a full list of reasons for being turned down for credit.

I've been turned down

Insufficient income

The credit that you’re applying for may be unaffordable due to your income or outgoings.

Repayment problems

You may have been made bankrupt in the past, missed payments or have a CCJ against you.

Too much borrowing

You may have too much borrowing with us or other banks and building societies.

Missing information

We may not have received the correct level of information about your income or outgoings when we assessed your application.

Low credit score

You may not have reached the minimum credit score needed.

Can I appeal?

What if I don't agree with the decision?

You can appeal against a decision, but we might not be able to change the outcome of your application.

My circumstances have changed

If your circumstances have changed then you can use our Appeals Process. Full details of our appeals process can be obtained at your local branch.

What do I do next?

You must make the appeal within 30 days of our credit decision, and you should give us any relevant information that you feel supports your request.

Can I apply elsewhere?

Check other lenders

Every lender has a different scoring system. If you're going to apply elsewhere, use an eligibility checker tool before applying.

Bear in mind

The credit reference agency will keep the search we did about you on file. If another lender uses the same agency, they will tell them about our search too.

Space out your applications

Applying for credit elsewhere will have an impact on your credit rating. Lots of credit searches in a short space of time can affect your score, so it helps to space out any credit applications.
